An automated home is controlled by the owner through a centralized and programmable hub that connects and communicates with the digital devices in your house. These household devices include; heating systems, automated door locks, thermostats, appliances, televisions, lights and shades just to mention a few. Home automation offers solutions to collectively add value to customers. It is in this light that we indulge in understanding how home automation effects energy management.

Home automation effects energy management by controlling the lighting, thermostats and other energy consuming house appliances and systems. This includes;

Shades

Shades are a regular feature when it comes to home décor, ambiance, style and the need for privacy. Wired, wireless and battery operated shades offer all the mentioned benefits and manage your home’s energy consumption. To cut on cooling costs, automatically lower the shades to block sun and heat during hot summer months. To lower heating costs during cold winter months, raise the shades automatically to allow the sun in and warm your home. Additionally, you can set the shades to allow in natural light and offset the need to use electrical lighting during the day. A term referred to as Daylight Harvesting

Thermostats

Thermostats are responsible for heating and cooling your home. There is no reason to incur high heating and cooling costs when you are not home. While automated thermostats can adjust accordingly with a set schedule or once you arm or disarm your security system, the ability to raise and lower the temperature of your home instantly with your smart device gives you the ability to save even more energy.  Let’s face it, life can be a little crazy at times and doesn’t allow most of us to live with a set schedule every day.Moreover, another benefit is that you can also receive alerts on your smart device when house settings are changed, and temperatures exceed a predetermined range. This significantly reduces the risk of issues that might come with extreme cold or heat.

House lighting

This is the most obvious energy management feature of home automation. It is easy to forget to turn the lights off especially when you are in a hurry, going back home is many times impossible or impractical. Home automation enables you to check the status of your house lights, turn them on or off to save bulb life, electricity, and money. You can also randomize the lights for a lived-in look while you are away on vacation or business trip for added security.

Automated schedules

To make your home greener and save energy effectively, create automated schedules. For example, you can program the lights to go off, thermostat to adjust to economical settings and shades to be drawn when you are leaving the house. The air or heat can be scheduled to turn on an hour before you or your kids get home so that everyone arrives to a well-conditioned house. With home automation, different devices can turn on and off automatically at set times of the day or when you choose to change them with your smart device; features that can greatly effect energy management.

Home automation and energy management go hand in hand. It enables you to save energy by controlling the consumption in your house, enjoy comfort and convenience without having to interfere with your daily routine, and thus, be used when and where needed to achieve the desired temperatures or house conditions.
