You may have acquired your home before having children. Meaning that child home safety measures could not have been a priority. After all, you and your partner know how to stay safe at home. From the moment you realize that you are going to be parents, you should start working towards achieving a child safe environment. You may not realize it, but your home presents a wide range of hazards for babies and young children. However, there are things you can do to make you home safe for your child and enjoy long-term peace of mind.

Lock windows

Children always have the energy to implement all sorts of adventurous tricks they think of. This includes trying to jump off a window without realizing how dangerous that can be. Lock windows to avoid accidental or adventurous falls.

Landing lights

It is advisable to leave landing lights on during the night or use motion sensing lights to protect your child from tripping if they need to use the bathroom.

Smoke alarms

You should install smoke alarms in the kitchen, basement, garage, sitting area, all floors preferably at the corridors and if you have the financial capability, in every bedroom. Test the fire alarms often to ensure that they are in proper working conditions and replace the batteries yearly.

Keep medicines and cleaning supplies out of reach

Medicines and cleaning supplies can be poisonous if consumed by both children and adults. Children will want to play with or eat anything they deem edible. So, to avoid emergency hospital visits, store medicine and cleaning supplies in high locked cupboards where children cannot reach.

Hot drinks

Keep hot drinks out of reach to prevent scalds and burns. Hot drinks include; your hot cup of coffee or hot water. Basically, keep your child away from hot things including your dishwasher, stove, and heaters. They will want to touch these items and end up getting burnt.

First aid kit

Home safety not only entails threat prevention but also being ready to deal with hazards when they occur. As such, it is important to have a first aid kit within reach. It allows you to deal with injuries as well as abate their effects before getting to the hospital when necessary.

Search engines parental control

The internet can make or break your child’s morals. Parental control protects your child from accessing inappropriate content online.

Safety guards on stairs

Another crucial area to secure are the stairs. Despite having stair rails where your child can hold for support, you should add stair guards. You child can accidentally put their hand through the stair rails gap as they try to climb them with the rails. This can easily lead to a fatal fall. You can add banister or mesh guards. Alternatively, add a stair gate that should always remain closed.

Bottom line

Home safety should always be a priority especially when you have young lives to protect. Above are just a few examples of the safety measures you should take to protect your child. However, there are many things you can and should do.
